BC Hydro incentives for commercial clients, solar & battery rebates and tax benefits
For business and commercial clients, there are two main BC Hydro paths plus tax benefits in the background:

- • The Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) for batteries that provide demand flexibility

- • The business solar & battery rebates for smaller grid-connected solar and storage projects that are not on ESI
On top of that, qualifying clean energy investments can access tax benefits. HANNA Energy is a Proud BC Hydro Alliance member and treats all of this as part of system design, not a separate exercise.
Energy Storage Incentive
Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) for business batteries
For Battery Energy storage projects that provide demand flexibility, BC Hydro’s Energy Storage Incentive can cover a large share of the project cost.
The incentive is calculated as the lesser of:
- 10,000 dollars multiplied by the nominated kW
- 10,000 dollars multiplied by the nominated kWh divided by 4
- 80 percent of the eligible project costs
In return, the battery is enrolled to respond to BC Hydro dispatch signals within agreed limits.
On ESI-focused projects, HANNA Energy:
- Designs the system so it meets ESI technical requirements and nominates realistic kW and kWh values for your operation
- Coordinates interconnection, controls and data so the system can connect to BC Hydro’s platform as required
- Prepares and submits the ESI application package with technical details and cost breakdown
- Works with your accounting or advisory team so the project also uses available tax benefits on eligible storage equipment & installation
The result is a Battery energy storage system (BESS) project that addresses your real energy problems and can receive a significant ESI contribution plus tax benefits, instead of relying only on operating savings.
Business solar and battery rebates
For some BC Hydro business customers, adding a solar array and a smaller commercial battery on a rebate model makes more sense than entering an ESI contract.
Eligible BC Hydro business rebates can include:

for projects that meet their business solar and battery criteria.
Solar panel rebates for business:
- 1,000 dollars per kW of installed solar generator capacity
- Rebate capped at 50 percent of total installed solar cost
- Maximum solar rebate 10,000 dollars
Battery storage rebates for business:
- 500 dollars per kWh of installed storage capacity
- Minimum storage size 5 kWh, maximum 100 kWh
- Rebate capped at 50 percent of total installed battery cost
- Maximum battery rebate 10,000 dollars
These business rebates are first come, first-served while funding lasts and cannot be combined with ESI on the same system. In practice, a project normally follows either the ESI route or the business solar plus battery rebate route, not both.
On rebate-based projects, HANNA Energy:
Checks whether the BC Hydro account and site are eligible for business solar and battery rebates under current BC Hydro rules
Size solar and battery so they sit in kW and kWh ranges that make sense operationally and from a rebate perspective
Prepares and submits BC Hydro business rebate applications with the required technical information
Works with your accounting or advisory team so the project can also use available tax benefits on qualifying equipme
The goal in both paths is the same: a system that solves a real business problem and uses BC Hydro money and tax treatment fully, not partially.
